A Real Computing Giant Dies

Posted by Scott at 11:59 PM

Good morning! It's a rainy one here but sometimes the clouds help you see the autumn colors better as the trees don't get as washed out in sunlight. I dropped the girls off at their schools, but am working from home today because of an eye doctor appointment late this afternoon. 9:18am

I got a call from my dad. He and mom will not leave for New Hampshire today. Perhaps tomorrow if mom feels better. We'll see what a day of rest does. It's also the day my sister gets her hair dyed pink for all of the contributions at her fundraiser. Michelle is off taking a Step class at Golds while I'm VPN'd into work catching up on the overnight email. 9:20am

Ya' know. I see photos like this and think, "yeah, it looks cool 'til you punch a hole in your oil pan." 9:33am

Learn more about him Dennis Ritchie died? Much like the Apple fanboys felt last week, I feel sad. Dennis was a key developer of the C program language and Unix. 99+% of the sites you visit are powered by technology he was fundamental in. He really did influence most computing technology you touch these days, not just iPhones and iPads. But I can almost guarantee you won't see news stories about it. 9:37am

Back from lunch with my spiritual director. Lots of food for thought. (pun intended) Michelle just called after finishing up today's radiation treatment. One week left to go. Next Thursday is the last one, but this last week they'll modify the beam somehow. Then it's just monitor, monitor, monitor... 1:42pm

Thumbnail of sbilik — Emacs — The Power of M-x butterflyI did not realize the recent versions of Emacs do have the “butterfly” command. (background link) Cute! ELisp'ers with too much time. 2:18pm

At the eye doctor with Claire. Glad it's an overcast rainy day. 4:07pm

Back from the eye doctor. For you photography geeks out there, currently my eyes are about f1.0. 5:56pm

After a quick dinner, I head over to Golds Gym for the Muscle Mix class. Afterwards stopped by Subway to check in on Claire and get a tuna sub and some treats for the kids. Got the boys tucked in bed with their prayers. Now just need to do a bit of reading before I head out to pick up Claire. 8:49pm

Poor Claire. Subway didn't finish post closing cleanup until a little after 10 o'clock. Good night all! 10:30pm
