You're Not the Customer, You're the Product

Good morning! Man! I slept like a rock last night. I dropped the girls off at their schools.Cool, sunny autumn morning at ~60-65°F as I listened to more of "The Diamond Age" on the commute in. The more I listen to this the more I get creeped out by nanotechnology. It's potential for good is huge but it could also be abused. It reminds me of nuclear, but on the other end of the spectrum with things being minuscule instead of hugely powerful. 9:02am

Interesting thing about the overlords of our corporate IT. They've decided that with some exceptions, no one should be running a VNC server because it's can be rather insecure unless properly setup. But they didn't send out an email saying to remove it. They scanned all systems and automatically are removing VNC servers and giving you an email notice that it happened. 9:08am

Left work a smidge early and head north to catch tonight's Step class. Listened to more of "The Diamond Age" along the way. When I got home Michelle was at Milford Elementary with the twins for an open house. 7:03pm

Found out there's a local Dr. Who fan club meeting at the town library next Tuesday. Unfortunately it'll be when I'm at work. 7:20pm

Some days I hate modern education. We just learned the new system for Milford Elementary grading. No A, B, C, D, F. Now it's PD (proficient with distinction), P (proficient), PP (partially proficient), and AC (area of concern). 7:22pm

Chicago is America's Most Mustache-Friendly City. I'll have to remember that next time I head over to visit family. ;-] 9:04pm

Got the boys tucked in bed with their prayers. I'm going to do a little research on side loading content onto the Kindle. So far I've just picked up things wireless from their store, but want to explore the numerous free works that can be loaded onto it. *.pub, *.mobi, etc. What does it all mean? (related link) 9:05pm

I have a VM with Linux Mint LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition). I installed it a few weeks ago to try something mainstream with a lightweight LXDE type desktop environment, similar to some of the OS distributions aimed at lower end hardware (or older boxes). I guess the folks at Debian pushed out some major updates recently because usually the update procedure goes fast but tonight it was hundreds of packages and many megabytes of downloads... 9:49pm
