Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 09:35 PM

Good morning! One thing about being on the eastern edge of the time zone, sunrise is now ~5:15am and the sky lightens up ~4:30. (Chicagoans can relate) ::Yawn:: Michelle & I used the early time to watch last night's finale of Big Bang Theory. The guys use a dating service to find Sheldon a match, and she is so perfect for him. It's like she's from the same planet as Sheldon. 5:50am

Smooth drive down to Boxborough today. Sunny and in the upper 60's, but the pollen levels had me really sneezing. It's going to be in the lower 90's later this afternoon. This is too soon. Wait until school lets out and we can go to the pool. 8:54am

It's 90°F in Milford, New Hampshire. In May. Glad the office HVAC is working well, but still had a nice walk over lunch. 1:43pm

Smooth commute home. While I was gone: Michelle taught her 20/20/20 class; Timothy had an encouraging hearing test; Michelle got her daily zap; 4 sprinkler heads were replaced; Super Mario Galaxy 2 arrived; my copy of the novel "Theophilos" by Michael O'Brien arrived. 7:11pm

Michelle's current definition of a mixed drink: cranberry-apple juice cocktail diluted with seltzer water. After the rough year she's had, I think I should introduce her to something with more kick. ;-}. 7:19pm

Watched season 3, episode 12 of Chuck, "Chuck Versus the American Hero" with Michelle and the girls. Now it's going to be a NyQuil night. Good night all. 9:34pm

Bookmarks I made today:

Geek Pride Day - Wikipedia
Comment: Happy geek pride day. And don't forget your towel.
Excerpt: Geek Pride Day is an initiative which claims the right of every person to be a nerd or a geek. It has been celebrated on May 25 since 2006, celebrating the premiere of the first Star Wars movie in 1977. It is on the same day as Towel Day.

Worst Water | Eat This, Not That
Comment: One way to visualize how fattening some of these drinks are is to put snack equivalents right next to them. Some are just mind boggling!

A New Type of Phishing Attack
Comment: Be forewarned. This site actually *demonstrates* the phishing attach when you tab away and then come back to it. Do NOT login. But overall it's a devious, clever scheme in this era of tabbed browsing where we lose track of our open web browser tabs. I point this out because it's yet another way to scheme you into getting your *private* login credentials.
Excerpt: We’ll call this new type of phishing attack “tabnabbing“.

Google Chrome Leaves Beta on Mac and Linux
Comment: I've been using the beta on my Mac and Linux boxes and highly recommend it. I'll be doing my updates to this new stable version when I get back to the house.
Excerpt: Mac/Linux: If you've been waiting for a stable Google Chrome release before trying it out on Linux and OS X, today's your lucky day: Google has finally promoted Chrome to the stable channel, and it was worth the wait.

Intel kills Larrabee discrete GPU, will focus on integrated graphics
Comment: For the folks at ATI and NVIDIA, this is *huge* news. Almost since the day I'd started at ATI, rumors of Intel coming up with a radical new approach to graphics that would blow ATI and NVIDIA away were simmering. Turns out, it was as hard as we thought.
Excerpt: Intel's been promising to blow up the graphics market with its Larrabee GPU for over three years now with virtually nothing to show for it,

Marvell 10-inch Android tablet
Comment: I had to laugh at this "demo". It wasn't even allowed to be turned on. It's a Dilbert-esque demo. It could be an empty block of aluminum with a glass touch screen for all the author knows.
Excerpt: we don't know much about this new Marvell powered tablet, but we couldn't resist sharing our impressions of the very svelte 10-inch device. We only got a few minutes to play around with the slate at the Netbook Summit
