Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 08:35 PM

Good morning! Michelle just picked me up from the mechanic - LDN in Milford. Ruby was dropped off for a new set all seasons, balanced and aligned. Also oil change, timing belt, water pump, and rollers. Hopefully it'll all be doable by the end of the day. Either way major $$ cha-ching anticipated! 8:39am

Picked up my car. As I suspected, there wasn't enough time to get it all done today. Next week will be the timing belt/water pump/rollers work. 4:18pm

Back from a great Step & abs class. So ready for some dinner. 7:00pm

A test I'd been debugging all day finally works. Submitting the fixes to revision control always brings a sense of closure. Time to log out and do some studying... Good night all! 8:31pm

Bookmarks I made today:

What Happens when Engineers Own Dogs
Comment: While I'm a huge fan of "The Engineer's Guide to Cats" video -- http://youtu.be/mHXBL6bzAR4 -- now I know the *real* reason why we can't have a dog in the house. Michelle must be worried that I'd build something like this...

Flash 10.1 "Gala" Gives Mac Users Hardware-Accelerated Streaming Video
Comment: I'll be downloading this soon. It's crazy how much CPU Adobe Flash takes up in watching videos when there are perfectly good video hardware accelerators available in the Mac's graphics coprocessor.
Excerpt: Your Mac's processor can rest a bit easier now. Adobe has release "Gala," a preview release of Flash 10.1 that can utilize graphics hardware to accelerate streaming web videos, reducing the strain on already-hot CPUs.

YouTube - EWTN's Channel
Comment: My local cable provider dropped EWTN a couple of years ago for analog subscribers like me. I'm happy that recently EWTN has decided to post whole shows to YouTube, not just the typical 10 minutes YouTube excerpts.
Excerpt: EWTN Global Catholic Network, in its 29th year, is available in over 150 million television households in more than 140 countries and territories. With its direct broadcast satellite television and radio services, AM & FM radio networks, worldwide short-wave radio station, Internet website, www.ewtn...

Thoughts on Flash
Comment: Steve Jobs makes his official, detailed explanation about why they won't support Adobe Flash on the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
Excerpt: I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads.

The Best Improvements in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx - Ubuntu 10.04
Comment: Nerdy Linux geek news: Ubuntu 10.04 released today. I'm going to have the Linux partition of my MacBook update while I run out to get some exercise.
Excerpt: Ubuntu 10.04 is out today, and there are quite a few improvements in "Lucid Lynx," a long-term support release. What's worth checking out, beyond the geeky guts? A pretty nifty social manager, a great music store, faster boot-ups, and more.
