Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 09:37 PM

Good morning! Happy Feast of All Souls! It's going to be a typical busy Monday morning. Michelle will be teaching her Step class so I'll be taking the girls and the boys to their schools today. The kids aren't up yet, but I hope that they're all improving in health. 5:46am

Just got a reminder from HR that I haven't used my "employee designated holiday" this year. I'd completely forgotten about that benefit. Woot! I think the kids have a day off from school next week. Perhaps then... 9:29am

Laughing at something I heard on XM as they were discussing All Souls Day. "Purgatory :: the mudroom of heaven". Our house back in River Grove had a decent sized mudroom we kids usually used to enter the house. We kicked off our dirty shoes, snowy boots, etc. before ruining mom's floors. 11:44am

Just got the announcement that although corporate IT avoided Vista, starting next quarter it will be transitioning to Windows 7. First with new computers and then existing computers as needed. 11:49am

Got some strange glitch in our prescription insurance straightened out. Michelle's many prescriptions dropped from hundreds of dollars to about twenty. 12:53am

Took Claire back to the eye doctor. 2nd time's a charm. The replacement lenses actually fit her frames this time. :-P And to cheer her up on the way home, stopped by the drug store so she could pick up the latest issue of J-14, her favorite magazine. (related link) 3:52pm

Tried to help Claire with the part of PowerPoint (well, Apple Keynote actually) that I care the least about: transitions and animations. I often find the presentations with the coolest animations have the shallowest content. The problem I'm guessing she'll have is that our Keynote can do much cooler effects than the ancient PowerPoint she has at school. 5:09pm

Had enough of sitting at this desk, debugging simulations, etc. Time to reacquaint myself with the reason I sit here, ie. my wife and kids. ;-). 6:15pm

So 15 years ago this afternoon we were traveling north on Route 3 in Massachusetts and saw the famous "Bienvenue/Welcome to New Hampshire - Live Free or Die" sign for the first time. We quickly settled into our temporary apartment near the state line/mall area. When I called home to River Grove, I didn't realize that we hadn't told my folks we'd already left our old base housing. 6:22pm

Live ... from Hollywood ... it's Dancing with the Stars! 8:02pm

Bookmarks I made today:

Planned Parenthood Leader Resigns After Watching Abortion Ultrasound (Video)
Comment: Thankful.
Excerpt: The leader of Planned Parenthood in College Station, Texas left her post after watching the ultrasound of an abortion procedure. Abby Johnson told reporters that Planned Parenthood changed it’s business model from one that pushed prevention, to one that focused on abortion.

Sister Maureen Gets It Wrong by Kathryn Jean Lopez
Comment: I remember reading about Maureen Dowd's recent rant on Catholic nuns. Glad to see someone counter her absurdities...
Excerpt: Something sinister is happening in the Catholic Church, at least according to New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd. And the way she writes about it, it reads like the beginning of a treatment for a Dan Brown extravaganza. Her plot, you see, is just that absurd.
