More local news

Milford - Yesterday the vote to build a new police station was approved. In related news the fire at the school site which will be the future police station was ruled arson. While I was slightly in favor of the police having a real station that wasn't housed in an old hotel, I'm bracing for yet another property tax hike. At least the school budget remained level.

Mower - I picked up our small walk behind mower this afternoon from Nashua Power Equipment. I had dropped it off a few weeks ago to have its spring prep service and to have its carburetor replaced. This is the same mower we bought when we first got married and lived in base housing with its postage stamp lawns. This same mower that was then overkill now serves the function of a mere edge trimmer on our current lawn. When it was time to pay the repair/maintenance bill, it sounded a bit high but I wrote out the check. When I looked over the receipt, I noticed that the line item for a carburetor appeared twice -- at $60/each. Two carburetors for a lil' 3 1/2 HP mower?! Maybe it'll put out 7 HP now? Woo-hoo! They admitted the mistake and decided to just give me the $60 back in cash. It certainly seemed to start and run a lot better than when it had spring maintenance last year.

Thanks for the call tonight. I appreciate your prayers/thoughts as we venture on this trip. I'll write/call when we get home!
